What is a Split System Air Conditioner?
A split system air conditioner is a type of air conditioning system that consists of two main components: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit, also known as the condenser or compressor, is typically located outside the building and contains the important components that facilitate the cooling process. These include the compressor, the condenser coil, and the fan. The indoor unit, on the other hand, is responsible for distributing the cooled air throughout the indoor spaces. It usually consists of an evaporator coil, a fan, and air filters. Split system air conditioners are popular for their energy efficiency and energy consumption, as they cool specific areas or rooms rather than the entire building. This allows for more controlled and targeted cooling, resulting in lower energy usage and electricity bills. Furthermore, split system installation is relatively easy, with the outdoor unit placed on an exterior wall or in a central location, and the indoor unit mounted on a wall or ceiling. With their energy-efficient features and easy installation process, split system air conditioners provide a cost-effective and comfortable cooling solution for both residential and commercial settings.
Benefits of Installing a Split System Air Conditioner
At Runge Group, we understand the importance of keeping your home comfortable all year round. There are numerous benefits to choosing a split system air conditioner. One major advantage is the individual temperature control it offers for different rooms. With a split system, you can customize the temperature settings for each room according to individual preferences. This ensures that everyone in your home stays comfortable, regardless of their climate preferences.
In addition, split systems provide clean and filtered air, enhancing the overall indoor air quality. The system's filters help to remove dust, allergens, and other pollutants, making it ideal for those with allergies or respiratory conditions. Furthermore, split system air conditioners are known for their energy efficiency. They consume less energy compared to other types of air conditioning units, resulting in lower electricity bills without compromising comfort.
Choosing the ideal location for the system before you start the installation process is crucial, and our team of professional installers can guide you throughout the process. We will assess factors such as the external wall placement, direct sunlight, and the layout of your home to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.

Which Type of Split System Air Conditioner should you install?
When you are about to select a split system air conditioner to install, it's important to consider various factors to ensure that you choose the right type for your needs. One key factor to consider is the size of the area or room that needs to be cooled. Different split systems have different cooling capacities, so it's important to find one that can effectively cool the size of the space you have in mind. Another factor to consider is the energy efficiency rating of the split system. Look for units with high energy efficiency ratings to ensure that you save on energy consumption and reduce your electricity bills. Additionally, consider whether you want a reverse cycle split system, which can provide both heating and cooling capabilities. This option can be particularly beneficial if you live in an area with fluctuating temperatures throughout the year. Finally, think about any additional features you may want, such as a remote control for convenient temperature adjustments or a timer function for energy-saving purposes. By considering all these factors, you can choose the right type of split system air conditioner to get installed in your home.
Determining Size and Capacity Requirements
The size and capacity requirements is a crucial factor for the installation process to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency. At Runge Group on the Sunshine Coast, our team of air conditioning specialists can guide you through this process.
Several factors need to be considered when determining the size and capacity requirements for a split system air conditioner. First, the size of the room plays a significant role. A larger room will require a higher capacity air conditioner to effectively cool or heat the space. Insulation is another important factor to consider. Well-insulated rooms will retain the desired temperature more efficiently, reducing energy consumption. The number and size of windows in the room should also be examined, as windows can contribute to heat gain or loss. Additionally, the type of walls, such as external walls exposed to direct sunlight, can affect the cooling or heating needs.
A rule of thumb for calculating the power needed based on the square meterage of the space is 125 watts per square meter for cooling and 150 watts per square meter for heating. However, it's always best to consult with our air conditioning specialists for an accurate assessment.
Choosing to install an undersized or oversized split system air conditioner can have consequences. An undersized system will struggle to reach the desired temperature, leading to discomfort during extreme weather conditions. On the other hand, an oversized system may cycle on and off frequently, resulting in inefficient energy consumption and potential temperature fluctuations. Installing the Best Type for Your Home or Business Environment
At Runge Group, we help with a variety of split system air conditioner services to cater to the needs of both residential and commercial environments. We help with installing wall-mounted units, multi-split systems, and ducted air conditioning systems.
Wall-mounted units are popular for their compact design and ease of installation. They are perfect for cooling or heating individual rooms and offer adjustable airflow and temperature control. Multi-split systems are ideal for larger spaces, allowing for multiple indoor units to be connected to a single outdoor unit. This provides flexibility and zoning capabilities to cater to different cooling or heating requirements in different areas of the space. Ducted air conditioning systems are suitable for whole-home or office cooling and heating. They use a network of ducts to distribute air, providing consistent temperature control throughout the entire space.
Portable vs. Wall-Mounted Systems
If you can't decide between installing a portable or wall-mounted split system, it's important to consider the specific needs of your space. Portable systems are versatile and easy to move around, making them a great option for smaller areas or for renters who can't make permanent installations. However, they may not provide as efficient cooling or heating as wall-mounted units, and they can take up valuable floor space. Wall-mounted systems, on the other hand, offer a more permanent solution and are typically more powerful, making them suitable for larger rooms or open-plan areas. Their installation requires drilling into the wall and a suitable electrical connection, but they provide better temperature control and airflow. Ultimately, the choice between portable and wall-mounted systems depends on the size of the space, your specific cooling or heating needs, and your preference for versatility or long-term efficiency. At Runge Group, we specialize in split system installation and can help you determine the best option for your needs.
Preparing for Installation of a Split System Air Conditioner
Before installing a split system air conditioner, it's important to do your research and plan ahead. Start by determining the type of air conditioner that best suits your needs and the size of the area you want to cool. Consider factors such as energy efficiency ratings and energy consumption to ensure you choose an energy-efficient unit that will help reduce your electricity bills in the long run. Next, identify the ideal location for the indoor and outdoor units. The indoor unit should be placed in a central location that allows for optimal air distribution throughout the space, while the outdoor unit should be installed in an area that is well-ventilated and protected from direct sunlight. Additionally, make sure the installation site meets the necessary requirements, such as having an external wall for the outdoor unit and a concrete slab for larger spaces. Lastly, it's advisable to find a reputable air conditioning specialist to handle the installation. Choosing an expert group like us at Runge Group will ensure the proper installation of the system and can provide valuable advice on maintenance and usage. By adequately preparing for the installation of a split system air conditioner, you can enjoy a comfortable and energy-efficient cooling solution for your space.
Understanding the External Wall Requirements
It is highly important to understand the specific requirements for the external wall before installing your split-system. The external wall must be an exterior wall and strong enough to support both the indoor and outdoor units. This is essential for the stability and functionality of the split system air conditioner. However, exceptions do exist. False walls or foam-rendered walls are not suitable for installation as they may not provide the necessary support. So, whether you are considering a split system for your home or office, trust our expertise to guide you in selecting the ideal external wall that meets all the necessary requirements for a seamless installation.
Assessing Direct Sunlight Exposure
Direct sunlight can have a significant impact on the performance and efficiency of the system, making it crucial to evaluate the level of sunlight that will be hitting the unit. When assessing direct sunlight exposure, there are several factors to consider. Firstly, it's essential to determine the direction in which the window faces, as this will determine the amount of sunlight that enters the room throughout the day. Additionally, any obstructions such as trees or buildings that may block the sunlight should be taken into account. By carefully evaluating these factors, our team can determine the optimal position for the split system air conditioner installation, ensuring that it operates at its highest level of efficiency and provides optimum cooling comfort for your space.
Estimating Costs
The size of your house and the number of units you need will affect the overall installation cost. Additionally, existing electrical issues or complexities in the installation can also impact the budget. When purchasing a split system, it's essential to prioritize energy efficiency ratings. This not only helps you save on your electricity bills but also reduces your environmental impact.
Split System Installation Process
Once all the planning steps, such as selecting the appropriate unit and determining its placement, are completed, the actual installation process can begin.
First, the indoor unit needs to be installed on the interior wall. This unit is responsible for distributing cool air throughout the room. Care must be taken to ensure it is placed in a central location for optimal airflow.
Next the outdoor unit is installed on the corresponding exterior wall. This is crucial for efficient operation as it allows the unit to expel heat easily. It is important to choose a location that is away from direct sunlight and that provides adequate airflow.

Split System Installation Definitions
Back to back – A back to back split system installation for air conditioning is the easiest type of installation. This type of installation will have the outdoor compressor unit and the wall mount unit located on opposites sides of the wall. The compressor is on the outside and the wall unit on the inside.
The up and over – this type of installation has a little more involved. The indoor unit with be mounted on an internal wall, the interconnecting refrigeration pipes will be run up through the ceiling and over rooms in the house. The pipes then lead towards where the outdoor unit is located.
Side entry installation – This type of installation has the indoor unit positioned in the corner so the pipes can lead out the side of the indoor unit to the outdoor unit on the other side of the wall. Commonly onto a balcony area.
